Development of search and rescue robot for disaster events

Robots are becoming more common and we are seeing them sweeping floors and cutting lawns (well for some who have lawns). Only a few weeks ago we watched a robot drag a bag away from barriers under a bridge whilst thousands were stuck in traffic for seven hours. But the robot that we are working on is aimed at search and rescue. Devastating events like earthquakes and tropical storms, results in buildings collapse and trapping of people under rubble. A robot and not necessarily a big one can aid in situations like these. I will be talking about the design and assembly of such a robot.

  • David Jazani is a Portfolio Leader in the School of Computer Science and Technology at the University of Bedfordshire. He obtained his BSc in Architectural Engineering from Milwaukee School of Engineering, Wisconsin, USA and completed post graduate studies as varied as Fire Safety, Systems and Programming and later Education. Before becoming an academic he worked as a consultant and technical manager on specialist architectural projects. David's main research interests include Building Technology and Design, Sustainability, Energy Harvesting and Micro-generation as well as Computer Aided Design for 3D printing and Robotics/Mechatronics.
