Mainframe Degree Apprenticeships - How we made it a reality

Mainframe based Degree Apprenticeships became a reality in September this year and we now have a UK University teaching their students Mainframe which includes programming in COBOL.

We have guest presenters from Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) explaining how, in collaboration with the Mainframe industry we made this into a reality.

  • Robin Johnson at Manchester Metropolitan University
  • Robin has work in IT for for 40 years, starting as a computer operator for a seismic processing company in the 70s. More recently he has managed the IT Services unit for a small University and managed an ISP during the dotcom boom. Since 2002 he has worked at Manchester Metropolitan University Business School, initially taking a leading role in developing online resources for teaching technology and for the last 5 years developing and running work-based learning technology courses.

  • Elaine Duffin at Manchester Metropolitan University
  • Elaine was employed as an analyst/programmer in a home shopping company for 9 years, working mainly in mainframe COBOL. She returned to university in 2010 and completed an MSc in Artificial Intelligence followed by a PhD in computing at the University of Leeds. Elaine has been employed as a tutor at Manchester Metropolitan University since 2015 and teaches mainframe COBOL to students taking a degree apprenticeship.
