Shared Memory Communications (SMC) with z/OS Communications Server and Linux on Z


In this session, the speaker will provide an overview of Shared Memory Communications, including the Shared Memory Communications over RDMA (SMC-R) capability, as well as the newer Shared Memory Communications-Direct Memory Access (SMC-D) technology available on the z13 and higher. SMC-D with Internal Shared Memory (ISM) provides highly optimized intra-CPC communications, and is expected to provide substantial performance, throughput, response time, and CPU consumption benefits compared to standard TCP/IP communications over HiperSockets. Now that SMC is available on Linux on Z we will also review optimizing your z/OS and Linux workloads on Z using SMC. This includes reviewing measurements from a recent SAP Banking workload using SMC-D between z/OS and Linux, and a showcase of the significant results achieved by employing this new technology.
