Encrypting the RACF database: A demonstration and some considerations

RACF has recently announced the capability of encrypting the RACF database. In this session we examine some of the implications behind this announcement with respect to ensuring the recoverability of systems following some kind of failure.
This session will also include a live demonstration of moving a system to an encrypted RACF database.

  • Lennie Dymoke-Bradshaw at GSE UK
  • Lennie Dymoke-Bradshaw worked for IBM between 1996 and 2014. Lennie is partially retired but now performs work for various System z clients as a consultant.

    As a long-term MVS practitioner, he has worked with S/370 since 1975 when he started programming a 370/145 running DOS/VS in PL/1 and assembler. Over the years he has maintained his interest in programming while performing a variety of roles in applications programming, systems design, technical support, systems programming, software support, software pre-sales support and whatever other technical roles customers have asked him to do.

    During this time he has worked with (nearly) every level of RACF since RACF 1.3. Nowadays, Lennie also works with System z cryptography and maintains a keen interest in all computer security but especially in technical matters as applied to System z.

  • Mark Nelson, CISSP®, CSSLP® is a Senior Technical Staff Member with IBM's z/OS® Security Server Design and Development Team in Poughkeepsie NY, where he has spent the past 37 years working on RACF®. Mark's focus with RACF has been on auditing and data analysis (IRRDBU00, IRRADU00, RACFICE), RACF's Health Checks, RACF/Db2, RACF's support for digital certificates, and RACF's encrypted VSAM data set support.

    Mark is an active speaker on RACF, having spoken to user groups and IBM field representatives on four continents, and has received several SHARE "Best Session" awards, six-and-a-half "Top Gun/Best Session" awards from the Vanguard Enterprise Security Expo, four GSE "Best Vendor Session" awards, and was the 1999 recipient of the Vanguard "Chairman's Award".

    Mark is a co-author of the book "Mainframe Security for Security Experts: A Introduction to RACF", has helped write several Redbooks, and has published articles in NaSPA's Technical Support, z/Journal, and IBM's Hot Topics. Mark is the director of the Mid-Hudson Valley IBM Club Chorus and a private pilot. Mark is also a world record holder in the "Hokey Pokey".
