So you want to be a Data Scientist?

(IF)

Stream: DB2
Time: 11:45 - 12:45

Presentation

A user reports unexpected singularities in the Hessian matrix. Do you:

  1. ignore it?
  2. believe you have woken up in the middle of a sci-fi movie?
  3. Google it immediately?

Google is probably your best option as the user is likely to be one of those new-fangled job roles called a Data Scientist. You know that your DB2 / IMS / VSAM data is being offloaded to Hadoop but what are they actually doing with it?

This session explores the world of 21st century analytics with a focus on Spark and Machine Learning. It will show how, using open source technology such as Python and Jupyter Notebooks, your mainframe data can participate in these projects and how you can add value to your organisation’s data architecture strategy.

So if you cannot tell a logistic regression from your elbow, this is the session for you.

  • Michael Lowe at IBM UK LTD.
  • Michael has 32 years of experience in the industry, most of which has been related to the IBM mainframe and the last 18 of which has been spent at IBM. During the nineties he spent 5 years at Candle Corporation where he specialised in Db2 performance and tuning and presented on two occasions at IDUG. His current role is focused on Analytics on the mainframe, including the Db2 engine, machine learning and data virtualisation technology. His favourite pastime outside work is fell walking in the Lake District: in 2016 he completed a seven year programme of visiting all 214 "Wainwright" summits. Earlier this year he walked the first 60 miles of the Coast to Coast walk, which he plans to continue over the next two years.
