Making the Mainframe a Millennial Magnet

Attracting and retaining the next generation of top talent

According to the European Union, there will be an expected shortage of 700,000 skilled technology workers in Europe by 2020. In some countries such as the Czech Republic, there is already effectively zero unemployment among qualified IT professionals. In this competitive climate, how can we hope to attract and retain the next generation of top talent to work on mainframe, a technology often unknown, ignored or misunderstood by millennials?

In this session, I will explain how we’ve successfully grown CA’s mainframe teams in Prague from zero to 250 of the brightest engineers on the market. I will provide tips, tricks and lessons learned, focusing on three main areas: initial contact (advertising, public events, educational outreach), getting great candidates on board (interviewing, hiring, training), and keeping them happy (working conditions, culture, career development). Attendees involved in mainframe hiring should leave this session better prepared and equipped to attract and retain the best talent available to their mainframe teams, even in this hyper-competitive market.
