Common practice these days is to compromise backups, or database image copies, before the real attack takes place. Modern high-speed encryption on mainframes makes the attack even faster – after all ransomware is often just encryption but you don’t have the key. Vulnerabilities in attached platforms can introduce unforeseen weaknesses. Any janitor can spot a userid / password written on a sticky note.
