I smell a rat - A Linux forensics approach

(4BD)

Stream: Virtual Room 4
Time: 13:30 - 14:30

Presentation

Whether it is big or small, a data breach can have catastrophic consequences for an organisation. Apart from external hacks, human negligence, or acts of espionage some breaches are due to leaks fuelled by insiders. Whistle-blowers, disgruntled employees, and job leavers represent a permanent threat to an organisation’s confidential data and sometimes it is difficult to pinpoint the location or the methods used by one to transmit them to the outside world. In this session I will introduce you to some of the complex techniques used by insiders to achieve their goal and how you can discover their actions without the use of expensive or specialist software.

From Base64 encoding to file embedding, we will take a journey into the wonderful world of digital forensics and its importance in today’s connected world.

  • Since my first introduction to computers, albeit through the gaming industry, I was fascinated with the log and algorithms that make computers do what they do. Furthermore, the people who write the programs and what goes on in their minds. I worked my way through various roles in IT, ranging all the way from a PC operator through to a fully-fledged support engineer. I was introduced and developed a passion for forensic science and then digital forensics, as I saw the world was changing rapidly and there was a greater need for a sophisticated approach to guarding valuable corporate and customer data.
