  • Mary Russell at GSE UK
  • Mary Russell joined the industry in 1980 and was always a techie despite attempts to drag her into management. She worked for a small software house, a county council, British Gas, British Shipbuilders, British Telecom, M&S and finally IBM. She has helped a number of youngsters at the start of their careers. In IBM she was part of a group that went out to (girls’) schools to get 12-13 year olds started on technical projects and also did an amount of interviewing for the graduate intake scheme. She could talk about ‘the way things were’ but she says that if she were a youngster now, she would be just as keen to be a techie and sees working in the IT industry as the best way to get a good, safe and interesting career and is confident that there will be good jobs in the mainframe industry for many years to come. In short, she says that although she is retired, old and past it (her words!) she still cares about getting young people into the IT industry. In fact, she is passionate about it.
