Presentation

Mental Rehearsal has been a technique used for many years by high performing sports athletes to help better ‘visualise’ and anticipate the challenges that may be encountered during sporting competition to help devise strategies to overcome these should they occur.

So, why in today’s modern IT environment should we start to consider such an approach to help anticipate IT failures and devise recovery strategies to ensure these can be quickly overcome?

Today’s modern IT environment provides the stability and reliability upon which High Availability (HA) IT services can be delivered.  The characteristics of today’s IT environment include a low frequency of failure and sophisticated monitoring which exploits automation to provide machine speed responses to events that prevent or mitigate the risk of interruptions to service.

Is a consequence of this environment over time skills degradation. Our frontline IT support personnel now have limited opportunities to gain familiarity and practice in dealing with exceptions and recovery. This in particular impacts critical cognitive skills which provide the ability of an individual to perform the various mental activities most closely associated with learning and problem solving. This can be a significant factor in introducing the risk of human error when dealing with IT failure scenario’s not previously experienced or rarely practiced.

This session introduces the concept of ‘Mental Rehearsal’ and provides the case for why our overall approach to ITSCM now needs to embrace this as a valid planning and preparation technique to ensure that the core capability of IT Restart and Recovery remains fit for purpose in the modern IT environment.
