Remote Science on the Mayflower Autonomous Ship

(5AB)

Stream: Virtual Room 5
Time: 10:30 - 11:30

Presentation

In April 2021, a completely autonomous ship with no human crew will set sail from Plymouth, UK to Plymouth, MA in the United States to commemorate the 400th Anniversary of the Mayflower voyage. A first of it's kind AI captain sits at the (virtual) helm of the Mayflower Autnomous Ship, but crossing the Atlantic is just a part of a greater Mission. Packed onboard this tiny (15m long) ship is a plethora of science experiments that will analyse the state of our oceans during its voyage. A combination of efficient data capture, and AI will process the data in real time and transmit it back to land. From Whale Song to microplastics, this talk will cover the technology underpinning the science experiments onboard the MAS as well as the technology needed to support them in the harsh environment of the Atlantic Ocean.
