Presentation

It's widely acknowledged that finding a new generation of mainframers is an urgent and important task across the industry. The question remains though "Where best to find them?" Some organisations seek out mainframe friendly degree programmes while other focus on training applicants from a general pool. While there have been many positive initiatives run by major companies over the last few years, bringing new people on board, what can we learn from tales of both success and failure? Is there a distinctive set of skills of attitudes that distinguish mainframers from other IT specialists? and if so how can they be identified? What distinguishes between those who enjoy a long career on the platform and those who move on from it. Project WILMa, short for Will I Like Mainframe, began as a set of interview questions to help candidates and interviewers explore whether a mainframe career might suit them. The project has recently expanded to include work with Industrial Psychologists to try and align the observations of mainframe recruiter with some more formal understandings of workplace characteristics. This talk explains the work done so far as part of the WILMa project discusses its plans for the future.
