Stream: Virtual Room 4
Time: 14:00 - 15:00
Last year Henri and Dougie Lawson ‘competed’ in “The Advent of Code”, an open to all set of programming challenges to be solved in any language or tool.
We’ve both solved (as much as possible) the challenges in REXX and COBOL and would like to share with the audience some programming tips & tricks for COBOL and REXX, compare some solutions showing the different pros and cons to both languages when solving particular issues.
Henri Kuiper is a pre Y2K Mainframe junkie. Started taking apart computers at a very young age (BBC Micro's Anyone?) and never stopped his love for 'taking things apart' (and mostly putting them back together too). He's Technical Coordinator for the Dutch region of Guide Share Europe, IBM Champion for z Systems, owner of zDevOps.com pro-deo teacher at 'codeuur.nl' (teaching primary school kids how to program) and loves all things IT :)
Until 2014 Dougie Lawson was a senior software specialist in IMS with IBM Global Services in the United Kingdom, working in software support for the UK and Ireland and with the European software support teams. He has forty years of experience in the IT field and thirty-nine of those working with IMS. His areas of expertise include Assembler Programming, IMS, Db2, Linux, COBOL, PL/I, C/C++ and z/OS. Before joining IBM in 1994, Dougie worked as a senior systems programmer for a large bank in the UK, where he was responsible for their IMS & Db2 systems and related products. He's now roaming the (virtual) world as a Database Specialist finding lots of strange, lonely and forgotten IMS & Db2 systems to play with.
