Understanding PARMLIB for a successful IPL

(7BA)

Stream: Virtual Room 7
Time: 12:00 - 13:00

Presentation

A successful IPL, rather than the dreaded backing out, is always what you want to achieve. No one wants to discuss the wasted downtime on test and production LPARs with the forced restore back to the old system, unless you are testing or simulating your DR capabilities. This all means you need an understanding of the parmlib members and in effect how to analyse them. This presentation will focus on some of the primary members and though IEASYSxx is usually considered the anchor member for SYS1.PARMLIB, long before that comes into play is LOADxx.  LOAD is rarely changed but really important for NIP – the Nucleus Initialization Program. LOAD also identifies the elements required to IPL a system including the IODF, Nucleus, System symbol member (IEASYM), Master Catalog (SYSCAT) and Parmlib Concatenation. The SYSPARM parameter contains the response to the operator prompt for system parameters, but if that’s got errors do you really want it defined in all LOAD members.

This presentation is for those that will be or are involved in IPL process and indeed upcoming z/OS release changes, in particular are responsible for making changes to PARMLIB. Though concentrating on the LOAD member we’ll also discuss some of the extensive other members in PARMLIB and the impact they have on the IPL process, including some on the sub-systems that follow-on in the IPL sequence.
