Gaining Insights from Exploring MQ Statistics and Accounting Data

Despite the fact that MQ is widely used across today's z/OS environments and its SMF data offers rich potential insights for its management and operation, sites often report challenges realizing the potential value of this data. This can arise from factors including overwhelming Accounting data volumes and the limitations of available MQ tooling.

 

This session will present numerous examples of the types of insights into MQ operation and performance that are available through exploring MQ Statistics (SMF 115) and Accounting (SMF 116) data. Attendees can expect to learn how MQ SMF data can help them:

• Identify potential opportunities to improve MQ buffer pool and MQ logging configurations and performance
• Generate a profile of typical MQ command activity and identify deviations from the norm
• Compare the differing profiles of work generated by the types of callers of MQ services, including elapsed and CPU times
• Identify consumption and elapsed time profiles of the specific drivers of MQ activity (e.g., by CICS transaction, batch job, etc.)
• Navigate through the typically massive volumes of MQ Accounting data and quickly focus analysis on the desired subset of data
• Examine various MQ metrics at the queue name level including queue depths
• Determine message length distributions and maximums generated by various MQ callers at differing levels of detail
• Identify workloads generating MQ persistent messages that can drive additional logging activity
