XCF Transport Class simplification functionality was implemented in z/OS 2.4, with an objective to eliminate the need for separately managed transport classes at most sites. This new functionality has been generally well-received and been effective in accomplishing its objective of minimizing the XCF customization activity required by systems programmers. However, to get the best value from this new capability, installations should ensure that their XCF signaling resources are consistent with XCF’s new approach. One remaining site-dependent configuration activity relative to XCF is determining an appropriate number and size of signaling paths and associated buffers. To assist with this analysis, z/OS 2.4 introduced XCF path usage metrics in the RMF 74.2 records. In this session Frank and Todd will: • Explain why you might need to make changes to your current setup • Explain the XCF concepts behind the metrics • Discuss ways to interpret the metrics to better manage your XCF configuration. Attendees of this session can expect to come away with a better understanding of how XCF operates in general, tips about how to optimize their XCF environment (for the new paradigm and in general), and information about what can be learned from the new Path Usage metrics.

Frank is the editor of Cheryl Watson's Tuning Letter, and also consults on sysplex, availability, and performance issues, and teaches software pricing workshops with Cheryl. Prior to joining Watson & Walker in 2014, Frank worked in the IBM Redbooks organization, where he was responsible for sysplex Redbooks and ITSO workshops.
Todd Havekost has over 40 years of IT experience with a primary focus on system and subsystem performance across the IBM Z platform. He joined IntelliMagic in 2016 after experiencing first-hand as a customer the visibility IntelliMagic Vision provides into SMF data, and now spends his days helping customers derive great value from their own SMF data to improve availability and performance. Todd is a highly-regarded industry speaker and has given award winning presentations at events such as SHARE and CMG.
