Presentation

Organizations often look at the mainframe processor and see a bottom-less pit with no way of knowing what is driving the usage. A monthly utilization percent or MIPS number is used, without fully understanding the applications that drive the peak spikes. Business leaders are searching to answer the question: “Is my application executing on the most cost efficient platform?”.

How does an organization uncover the multiple layers to understand what is driving the utilization? Application mapping is essential to uncovering what lies beneath the utilization numbers. However, there is more to it than just mapping the application. What time of day does the application run? Is it a batch workload at night and an online workload during the day? Or a combination? These questions are the ones that need to be answered to understand the ROI for operating an application in the mainframe environment.

The first question is how to begin the application mapping process? What tools can be used to help defining the application. Take for example an insurance company who wants to reduce its mainframe footprint and re-platform the application environment to reduce the increasing mainframe cost. In addition, the company wants to prepare their future financial statements to know when they can expect to see cost reductions during the re-platforming processes.

Understanding and predicting the application usage impacts is a driving force. Can multiple mainframe processors be eliminated? Can workload be moved to another mainframe? What is the size of the application being moved? Using a forecasting model based on seasonality using nine years of client data along with the understanding of the size of the application, when it executes on the mainframe over the 24 hour day, the impact on the mainframe can be accurately predicted and verified with each application removed. The forecast model allows the client to know specifically at what week in the year they can expect to see the application re-platforming impact. This will allow the client to budget and plan well in advance of the strategic moves.

In this session, Ensono Expert Capacity Planner Linda Carroll will share the journey with this client example and several other client use cases who are making the transition from the mainframe platform to other environments.
