Does the JVM parameter -Xmx5G mean that the process will take no more than 5 gigabytes on the system? Of course not. What else will virtual memory be used for and, most importantly, how much? The question becomes especially relevant when sharing resources between multiple processes, running Java in a container, or on a mainframe system using zCX.
In this session, we will analyze which virtual machine structures consume RAM, and how to monitor and regulate its consumption. We will explore various virtual memory management strategies and discover what has changed in new versions of the JDK. Along the way, the speaker will demonstrate real examples of native memory leaks and introduce tools for analyzing allocations.
