Certificates are a vital part of client server computing, allowing different computers to trust each other when sharing data and prevent prying eyes from learning too much about the conversation. However they're a bear to setup and configure, and a large number of mainframe runtime problems end up being in the area of mismatched certificates, poor understanding of certificate authorities and signing chains, or else end user just clicking through trust warnings without really understanding what's going on. This talk will cover the basics of certificates from a practical viewpoint of how to create and manage them on z/OS, how to deal with client certificate authentication, signing authorities, subject alternative names, AT-TLA, personal versus site certificates, extended key usages, and more....
