Enterprise COBOL Version 6 Compiler Options - What they do and Why to choose them?

(RM)

Stream: zP&C
Time: 11:15 - 12:00

Presentation

In this presentation, I'll go through a significant subset of the compiler options available in Enterprise COBOL Version 6 (both old and new) and examine why you might choose the options that you do, as well as providing reference information about all the options.

I plan to:
1.Provide hyperlinked descriptions of all of the compiler options in the slide deck for later reference, (though not go through each one)
2.Discuss types of compiler options by effect
•those that impact on compile time affecting only
•those that impact on Run time / Instruction set used
•those that affect the output produced
3.Discuss who could/should "own" the compiler options in an organization
4.Discuss approach to compiles, development, Production and how this affects compiler option choice
5.Highlight some ‘interesting’ compiler options

Speakers

  • Charles Gaskell at HSBC Bank PLC
  • A musician by training (a graduate of Sheffield University, King's College London and Edinburgh University), Charles first started working on mainframes at Midland Bank (later HSBC) in 1986 as an assembler programmer.

He was in application development for a decade, converting to COBOL (and Rexx), before supporting various middleware products (DB2, MQ and CICS) just as HSBC was adopting Data-sharing Parallel Sysplex technology, then joining the Mainframe Software Configuration Management team as an Endevor administrator is the very early 2000's, eventually heading up the Global Application Lifecyle Management team about 2008.

An 'offer he couldn't refuse' in 2012 led to him becoming an Endevor (and Middleware) consultant with stints at RBS, Barclaycard and IBM, before spending 5 years trying to earn a living from being a composer (he failed).

Since 2022, he has rejoined HSBC in his current role as Senior Endevor Administrator.

He's passionate about "doing the right thing", challenging uncorroborated assertions, asking questions, giving contemporary Culture and the Arts a central role in modern life, and fostering creativity, inside and outside of work. He's also a connoisseur of Arts Spraff and the absurd!
