Modernization starts with your Code

For decades, mainframe teams have been dealing with massive monolithic code bases that have not been refactored, dead code that has lain undiscovered and mountains of accumulated technical debt.  Is this just the way it is? Do mainframe developers have to live with these massive mono-lithic code bases? Is the only answer to re-write your code base and re-platform your core capabilities? The answer is no, you do not need to live with it and you do not need to re-write or re-platform. You can find dead code and eliminate it; you can make your monoliths more approachable for new developers and simplify them to make re-architecting your apps easier by refactoring your code and breaking it down. In this discussion, we will go through:

  1. Why is refactoring essential to getting to the next level
  2. How and where to begin looking at your code base
  3. Re-writing versus refactoring
  4. Techniques and patterns to refactor your code base
  5. Building a business case for refactoring
