Time: 12:15 - 13:00
Logs are the indispensable cornerstone of any system, serving as the ultimate record of all changes and activities. These meticulously maintained files are the silent guardians of data integrity, enabling robust recovery from unforeseen system failures, facilitating precise point-in-time restorations, and providing the essential data streams for replication and auditing. Key Types of z/OS Logs: System Management Facilities (SMF) Records, DB2 logs, IMS Logs, Job Logs, z/OS System Log System Management Facilities (SMF) records are the granular, time-stamped digital fingerprints of virtually all activity occurring within an IBM z/OS mainframe environment. Generated continuously by the operating system, these standardised records capture a wealth of critical data pertaining to resource and file access, I/O operations, and security events. Logs help: - Security Incident Detection - Auditing and Regulatory Compliance Applications of z/OS Log Analysis: - Security Monitoring: Detecting unauthorised access attempts and potential security breaches. - Incident Response: Facilitating rapid identification and resolution of system incidents. - Compliance Auditing: Ensuring that system activities align with regulatory requirements. This session discusses how to read SMF records related to security, such as SMF-80 RACF and system file access SMF records.
