The chip shortage and the need for remote development during and after the pandemic pushed the trend of providing low footprint, lightweight and remote development environments rapidly forward. Large development organizations such as Uber, Slack, Shopify, or Stripe are reporting on their positive experiences moving hundreds to thousands of their developers into the Cloud with personal containers accessed remotely. In this presentation we want to walk you through how these development tools work and how they can be applied to z/OS Enterprise Application development projects eliminating the need to deploy gigabytes of tools, dependencies, and source code to all your developer machines. Learn about the VS Code architecture and how it is enabled for connecting to remote systems, run standalone in the browser, as well as run entirely in the Cloud on platforms such as GitHub Codespaces, Gitpod, or Red Hat OpenShift Dev Spaces. We explain the differences between these platform choices and show you end-to-end z/OS development workflows in these environments for edit, build, deploy, and debug.
