The mainframe, an indispensable cornerstone of enterprise IT, continues to process mission-critical transactions with unmatched reliability and performance. As organizations adopt modern, application-centric observability solutions, integrating the mainframe presents a unique opportunity to unify traditional monitoring and contemporary observability practices, unlocking end-to-end visibility into critical business transactions processed on the mainframe. Distributed tracing captures the complete journey of user requests as they flow through multiple services and systems, creating a unified view of application dependencies and performance. OpenTelemetry has emerged as the open standard for observability that enables native transaction tracing in z/OS system software like CICS and IMS. In this session, we will showcase the power of native distributed tracing for z/OS transaction workloads using OpenTelemetry. We'll guide you through the configuration and enablement process, ensuring a seamless integration with your existing observability tools. We'll demonstrate how analyzing trace data from typical transaction flows reveals valuable insights into z/OS transaction processing. The session concludes by illustrating how distributed tracing for z/OS enables typical observability use cases such as incident detection and resolution.
