Stream: Open Mainframe Project
Time: 14:30 - 15:15
In today's dynamic IT operations, observability has become a crucial element for effectively managing complex, distributed systems. A recent survey by the Open Mainframe Project and OpenTelemetry project revealed a continued demand to grow OpenTelemetry knowledge in the Mainframe Community. In this session, we'll explore modern observability concepts and why they are essential for today's application-centric IT operations. As organizations adopt OpenTelemetry as an unified telemetry data layer, it becomes vital that mainframes are well-represented in this ecosystem. We'll delve into an in-depth exploration of the OpenTelemetry specification and its practical implementations, examining the latest advancements by the community and discuss their relevance for mainframe operations. We will update you on current activities to enable OpenTelemetry on the mainframe to simplify its observability. Our presentation will cover the progress in defining Semantic Conventions for the mainframe and the use of selected OpenTelemetry SDKs on z/OS. By the session's conclusion, attendees will possess a comprehensive understanding of novel observability capabilities and be empowered to take advantage of OpenTelemetry instrumentations on the mainframe for an enhanced observability and proactive incident management.
