Stream: Mainframe Skills & Learning
Time: 14:30 - 15:15
What I wish I'd learnt at college about a career in mainframe enterprise computing but no-one told me ! Computer science, Maths, Science, Humanity students are drawn to a career in IT for many reasons. Money, Passion, They're good at analytical problem solving, or another draw lures them to the candle. This talk is given from the perspective of a 58 year old IBMer (me !) who mentors folks at work (and beyond) on what they don't tell you at college (mostly because acdemics don't work for corporate employers). How to understand different communication styles, how to avoid quarrels and win battles through empathy rather than agression, how to avoid the red mist, how to deal with superiors who are inferior to you, how to present effectively and focus on resonating your ideas rather than refining them, how to hack and pack solutions, how to not fail fast and fail often but succeed with style and soft sell, how to under promise and overdeliver, what'll likely surprise you about corporate mainframers, and mostly how to have fun and enjoy your day job as well as the hobbies you can participate in with the money you'll earn there.
