What is an application? That seems like a simple question but surprisingly organizations find this a hard question to answer. Is your application the source code? What about the infrastructure your systems run on? What about your workflow orchestration and DevOps automation? How about the meta data that makes up your application? The reality is your application is all of these things and more. The infrastructure it runs on, the workflows and DevOps automation, the meta data and source code are all parts of the whole that is your application. In this mix and arguably most important of all is your application data and your data schema. Why then do most organizations separate out their data and schema from their applications? Making changes to your schema is a separate, manual workflow involving your DBA's manually updating your schema. Even worse are SQL updates in the code and stored procedures. Again, you have a manual process involving your dba's reviewing changes and manually verifying. There is a better way! Make your data and schema a part of your application and automate these processes via DevOps. This will free up your DBA's to do the important work of managing and optimizing your data while letting the system do the grunt work. In this interactive talk we will explore:
• What should and should not be automated
• What are some techniques to automate?
• What would an automated data pipeline look like?
• How does this help both the DBA and the application developer?
• Real world examples of how this works
