What can SMF data tell us about our z Mainframe internal usage.

(5H)

Stream: Virtual Room 5
Time: 11:15 - 12:00

Presentation

Our z/OS systems are a wealth of information that we typically use for performance reporting and error detection/investigation.
But SMF data can provide us with very useful information about our Mainframe internal hardware usage. This data exposes internal mainframe cache usage, instruction rates, specific processor core information and much more.
This session will explore what kind of hardware event data the HIS task collects and how it can be used to observe and optimize processor workload execution.

  • John Ticic started as a mainframe systems programmer in 1984 and has maintained, tuned, and upgraded a large number of MVS-based systems. John has extensive experience in planning and implementing large XRC and GDPS/PPRC installations. Furthermore, he developed many performance analysis tools (e.g. for STK/SUN VSM analysis). He has been working with IntelliMagic since 2008 and has been dedicated to interacting with European customers and prospects helping with performance issues. He also helps software development designing enhancements of the products in the z/OS Disk, z/OS Tape and z/OS Systems areas. John joined IBM in July of 2024.
