Db2 from the Inside Out: Directory, Catalog, Logs & BSDS Explained

(7B)

Stream: Virtual Room 7
Time: 11:15 - 12:00

Presentation

This session turns the subsystem inside out, giving Db2 practitioners a clear, authoritative picture of the internal structures that Db2 relies on from the moment it starts to the moment it recovers from failure. Starting from first principles, we'll distinguish the Catalog (DSNDB06, user-queryable, DDL-driven) from the Directory (DSNDB01, internal-only, runtime-critical) and explain why conflating the two leads to real operational blind spots. We'll walk through the full logging pipeline: how Db2 assigns Log Sequence Numbers, how the dual active log system protects against media failure etc. Attendees who leave this session will understand their subsystem in a way that changes how they interpret symptoms, plan maintenance, and respond to outages.
