Conquering CodePages, the Rosetta stone of mainframe texting

(1G)

Stream: Virtual Room 1
Time: 10:00 - 10:45

Presentation

A key area to understanding mainframe computing is how text data is stored on disk, how it is read and processed by applications, and importantly what to do when things get tricky. This talk will cover the background behind codepages and how to master everything from double byte character sets, bidi typing, internationalization, and what the pitfalls are when you get things wrong and your US apps run in Sweden (who have 29 letters in their alphabet) or Turkey (who have four letter Is) and elsewhere. With more open source and Linux software coming to the mainframe this is an area that even the most seasoned sysprogs and developers trip themselves up, and likewise it's something that often trips up newcomers who aren't famliar with text encoding.

  • Joe Winchester at Consultant
  • I work on open source projects around software tooling platforms. My current project is Zowe, which is part of the Linux Foundation and Open Mainframe Project where I am part of the leadership committee and an ambassador. Prior to Zowe I worked on Eclipse tooling and before that Java 2 Standard Edition. I enjoy astronomy, running, biking, piano, and in my spare time helping bring open source tooling to the mainframe computing platform for a new generation of Z heads.
