Understanding Unix System Services. Bourne to Bash and Beyond.

(2I)

Stream: Virtual Room 2
Time: 12:30 - 13:15

Presentation

The Unix System Services (USS) environment is an increasingly important environment in z/OS. Many traditional mainframers who grew up on ISPF, TSO or ISPF find it difficult to use, navigating with older tools like iShell or OMVS or using OEDIT for XML or YAML files. This talk will introduce USS and show how to configure an SSH client, how to obtain and install the Z Open Community tools to introduce powerups like curl, vim, bash, how to use Z Open Automation Utilities or Zowe's ZSSH CLI to get accesss from USS to MVS, how to understand utilities like zfsgrow to manage storage, and how to obtain and use python to take the next level in scripting. By the end of this session attendees should have understood the power behind USS and how to become a productive user as well as obtained a good set of links for futher reading to continue their learning. We'll have lots of demos too along with recorded videos.

  • Joe Winchester at Consultant
  • I work on open source projects around software tooling platforms. My current project is Zowe, which is part of the Linux Foundation and Open Mainframe Project where I am part of the leadership committee and an ambassador. Prior to Zowe I worked on Eclipse tooling and before that Java 2 Standard Edition. I enjoy astronomy, running, biking, piano, and in my spare time helping bring open source tooling to the mainframe computing platform for a new generation of Z heads.
