OpenTelemetry: Enabling Mainframe Integration within Enterprise-Wide Observability Solutions

(6J)

Stream: Virtual Room 6
Time: 13:45 - 14:30

Presentation

Many modern organizations are implementing enterprise-wide observability solutions to achieve end-to-end visibility across their systems, and IBM Z remains a critical component in these environments. OpenTelemetry provides a vendor-neutral, open-source framework to simplify the collection and management of telemetry data (traces, metrics, and logs) from diverse sources. This session demonstrates how OpenTelemetry bridges the gap, providing visibility into transaction flows across key z/OS components such as MQ, CICS, IMS, and Db2. Attendees will see how instrumenting mainframe applications generates standardized OpenTelemetry data, facilitating seamless integration with existing enterprise observability platforms. We’ll explore practical implementation steps to enable OpenTelemetry on z/OS, focusing on configuration within z/OS systems software and leveraging robust telemetry pipelines for efficient processing and distribution of telemetry data. Learn how to leverage this data to enhance incident detection, accelerate troubleshooting, and gain deeper insights into the performance and behavior of your z/OS landscape. The session will conclude with practical guidance for starting a proof of concept to evaluate this new functionality within your environment.
